Dropping It Like It's Hot Is Not Cool...At All

One night last week, I was out having a cigarette with my usual smoking crew, when a young lady that I've seen, but don't know personally, joined us.  She wasn't smoking, just chatting it up with a couple of people.  A young man that I'm acquainted with, and think is quite nice, had a portable speaker with him.  I hadn't seen this kind of speaker before, it's a small, round device on a tripod.  It's a must-have if you like to spontaneously throw parties.  When the non-smoking girl saw the speaker, she said, "Oooo, put on some music, you know I'm the queen of twerking...put my song on."  I've never twerked, but was quite satisfied believing that this particular dance craze had become passe, or so I thought.

When she repeated her demand for music, the young man, said "Come on now, I don't have any twerking music."  Maybe this was said for my benefit, because several people called him on that claim and told him to play "Circle That Ass." With that, the soon-to-be twerking young lady screeched with excitement.  The nice young man repeated that he didn't have any twerking music. That didn't stop anything, because another guy pulled the song up on his phone and somehow it started playing on the speaker.

Suddenly, the Queen of Twerking was doing the most provocative version of the twerk that I've ever seen.  I immediately took to surfing on my phone, and didn't look up again until another girl whom I'll call Dana said, "Uh-uh, don't do that in front of Miss Deborah (I used to hate being called that, but I loved it that night)."  Upon hearing this, I looked up from my phone. "Whoa!"  I didn't say that, but it's what I was thinking.  This girl had gone from twerking to super freak-twerking. That was my cue to leave. But I had to do it casually. I didn't want to seem totally shocked, although I was.  Who does this in public?  Was I the only one thinking that this girl is way out of control? Perhaps, but when the twerker started backing that thang up against the nice young man, I was waiting for him to say, "Hey, get off of me," but he didn't.  He just stood there smiling as she continued her "dance."

I don't know, maybe it's the music. It seemed like the more the words "ass in a circle" blared from the speaker, the more vulgar the twerker got. Maybe it's generational. Some of the smokers, (most of them are younger than me) started chanting "ass in a circle," while I sat there speechless, feeling like an unwilling extra in a porn movie.

I kind of feel sorry for the younger generation, because so many of them think they're the vanguard of popular culture. They believe that swearing and explicit lyrics makes a song, or simulating sex acts is really good dancing. It's not. From what I saw, not only are they clueless about music, when it comes to dancing, they may as well have two left feet.

  1. No, this is not cool, or cute. It's very un-ladylike, not that most girls care about being ladylike now days. But, each generation pushes the envelope a little more than the one before it. I shudder to think how this young woman's daughter will be dancing when she comes of age.

  2. If this keeps up, the envelope is going to be pushed off the table! They say that young Americans are actually trending towards more conservative personal behavior, but support others who choose to live differently. I can only pray that this woman's daughter will choose not to exhibit this kind of behavior in public.
