Perhaps?
Actually, it's a new program from General Electric called the Intelligent Cities Initiative. They will be installing 50 streetlights that will collect data. However, the data collected will not be used to notify police that a crime is about to happen, instead it will be used to make life easier (wait a minute, that would make life easier). Massive amounts of data will be collected and used for the industrial internet (who knew?). So eventually practically everything--public transportation, buildings, wind turbines, you name it, will "talk" to a hub and reduce or maybe even eliminate problems. For example, a train that will have brake problems in the future, will simply "tell" the hub, and engineers
will jump on it before it actually happens.
If you want to know what's going on globally regarding "intelligent cities" you'll find it here.
But still, it's make me wonder what's down the road, especially considering the name of GE's software that will drive all of this, it's Predix.
